Proper Workplace Ergonomics

Tips for Proper Workplace Ergonomics

Do you work in an office? Are you constantly sitting or doing repetitive movements all day? To avoid injury and chronic pain it is best to follow proper workplace ergonomics.  Here are some tips on proper workplace ergonomics to avoid injury for our team at Beaumont Chiropractic Clinic in Beaumont, TX.

Adjust Your Chair

When sitting at your desk, adjust your chair so your feet are flat on the floor and your thighs are parallel to the ground. The seat pan should support your sit bones while keeping your spine in a neutral position. Armrests should be level with your forearms while typing to help take pressure off your neck and shoulders. Do not forget to stand and stretch throughout the day!

Position Your Computer Monitor

Place your computer monitor directly in front of you, about an arm's length away with the top just below eye level. Looking down frequently strains your neck. Position external monitors at the same height and distance to minimize head turning. Reduce glare from windows by using curtains or blinds and an anti-glare filter if needed. This should help minimize neck and eye strain.

Use Proper Keyboard and Mouse Technique

When typing, keep your wrists in a straight neutral position. Avoid resting them on sharp edges or bending them for long periods. Position your keyboard close enough to prevent overreaching. For your mouse, place it next to your keyboard within easy reach. Hold it gently and avoid gripping too tightly. Take frequent breaks from typing and clicking to rest your hands.

Maintain Good Posture

Good posture at your workstation reduces injury risk. Keep your head balanced over your torso and refrain from leaning or craning your neck. Keep your shoulders back to avoid hunching over. Support your lower back with an ergonomic chair and cushion if needed. Change positions frequently and get up to stretch and walk around periodically.
